Apache HTTP Server
Apache is an open source HTTP (web) server - which means it is a piece of software that sits on a server and communicates with the web browser on your computer, sending the information you see on the screen and your feedback to and fro over the internet.
Apache is the most widely used HTTP server, partly because it is a free open source piece of software, and partly because it can do just about everything you could ask of a web server either itself or by one of the many available plugin modules (for example, secure SSL communication, or URL rewriting). And if it can't do something, you can add it by creating your own plugin module.
The current latest version is apache 2.2, which is available for a range of operating systems including Windows, Linux, MAC OS and UNIX. It forms the A in the LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) and the WAMP (Windows Apache MySQL PHP) stacks.
